Why Do They Come??

Wednesday 12 November 2008 at 11:55 am Tuesday was an interesting day for me. I was leaving the State Convention in Greensboro hoping to make it back to catch a bit of Raleigh North Youth Nite, when I receive an e-mail letting me know the teacher of the class had a work Crisis and could I cover him at Youth Nite. I told him I would somehow and then the amazing day started. God parted the traffic on I-40 like the Red Sea and I made it through the RTP in record time. I made such good time that I was able to have dinner with the wifey at Panera. We are teaching through the book of Mark, but I really didn’t have enough time to prepare so I just decided to share 1 John 4:19 , “We love because he first loved us.” The youth knows that we love them but I wanted to get them to understand where our love originates. I did several things to get them to listen. I played Alabaster Box by CiCi Winans, yeah I know its old school but it fit the lesson well. It was not as much a lesson as me sharing my heart with them. I wanted them know that we were not there to just help them make good choices, they hear that from everyone, we wanted them to make the greatest choice. It was a good time.
One interesting part was I gave them all an index card and told them to write why they came to Youth Nite. I told them not answer “Jesus, God, Moses” but to be honest. That there was not a bad reason to attend, so just tell the truth. The results of the 15 youth were: One said to see Scotty (I had made a joke that if they were honest it was to see and be seen with scottyb) William accused me of planting that one. Four said for the snacks. Six said to hang out with friends. One said to hang out with friends and “I need Jesus in my life”. One said it is the only time I can be with just other teens and not have to watch my sisters. One said, “I come here for God and to get away from my mom’s boyfriend.”
I was so grateful that they felt comfortable enough to be honest. Listen, we are reaching into the enemy’s camp for these youth and we can’t fool ourselves to think they are coming for bible study. We can’t expect them to come and behave like believers because they ARE NOT BELIEVERS. We just want them to come! Just like Rick Warren states in his book The Purpose Drive Church, “Evangelism is usually a process of repeated exposure to the Good News.” May God help us to be faithful to providing “repeated exposure to the Good News.”

Election '08 (You only think you know what I think about it)

Wednesday 05 November 2008 at 11:04 am Life is rarely a single layer. We form our opinions off a single layer most of the times. This election has many layers. I do not agree with all of Obama’s policies and politics. Yet I was excited to see a person of color elected to the office of President. Because of that excitement I have had people question my Christian Character, accuse of me of supporting abortion, placing culture over Christ and many other hurtful remarks and those were from my "friends". I was lonely and confused until:

I had a former youth who is now a College senior call me around midnight last night. He said "Scottyb I want to apologize to you." I said, "Ok, why do you need to apologize to me?" He replied, "Back when I was really struggling with school you were helping me with some projects I needed to pass the semester. You asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up and I said maybe President one day. You stopped and told me that If that was in God's will and if I applied myself in life that I could be President one day. Then you stopped and prayed with me about what God want me to be and if President was that the He would ordain it." Then my old friend told me, "I always thought you were just being nice and I never believed you until TONIGHT!"

From that moment on I could care less if people understood me!

Please understand that I have been immersed in this culture for 14 years of my life now. I do have a different perspective than others may have about this election. I am also able to look someone like Jessie Jackson as he was in tears last night and put aside my ideological difference I have with him and see a black man who has been in the struggle since Martin Luther King. I can understand the pride and since of accomplishment that he must have seeing a black man elected president.

Obama will not fix this country. McCain could not have fixed this country. A candidate that was cloned with the DNA of Abe Lincoln, George Washington, Harry Truman, FDR or Ronald Regan could not fix this country. The only thing that is going to fix this country is for Christians to get off of their pews to go into a lost world and form relationships with the unchurched to lead them into a relationship with Christ and then to disciple them to become effective and informed followers of Christ.

Making Melodies

Sunday 02 November 2008 at 07:32 am

Primo always asks me why I have to take a picture of him singing "Making Melodies". (Check out Mr. William jamming in the background.)

I love to see people who love the kids so much that they will throw their lives, no matter how silly it looks, into the kids. It means a lot to the kids when the adult and youth workers will sing songs, do motions, play games or even sit down and color with them. It transforms you from being a person who shows up to teach them things, to someone who shows they care enough to care about what the kids care about.

I encourage all the MR Missionaries. Sing the Songs, do the motions, play the games, or sit down and color, this will help you earn the right to share Jesus with our Kids.
