ADDICTION IS AN UGLY THING

Tuesday 06 November 2007 at 07:13 am "No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it." (1 Cor. 10:13)

I deal a lot with addictions. It hit me that addictions are common to man. Webster defines addiction as: devote or surrender (oneself) to something habitually or obsessively. Some addictions may be more destructive than others. We are appalled by such things as drug or gambling addictions because we can clearly see the negative effects it has on society and family. Yet it is important, as I have discovered in counseling, to realize that the temptation for addiction is common to man. There are addictions that we don’t see the ramifications of such as addiction to pornography, shopping, or food to name a few. Yet these addictions can rip apart families and lives just as much as crack cocaine. I have noticed people who are addicted to control, power, or attention. These addictions can stunt families and tear apart ministries.
There is no doubt that my life I have dealt with several addictions but my addiction to food and soft drinks has been the most destructive. An addiction that I will be taking drastic steps to cure.

When we understand that addiction is a temptation, and as Corinthians’ states that all temptations are common to man, it helps us to promote drug addiction to this much great satanic temptation. That allows us to set down with a hurting person and disciple them in the midst of there addiction. We all have the promise in Corinthians’ that He will not tempt us beyond what we can stand and He will always give us a way out.

Jesus would be the correct answer.
